Many world cities now facing water stress

An article on wunderground reports how many of the world’s biggest cities are taxing their water supplies, making them vulnerable to weather events such as droughts:

The researchers, led by hydrologist Rob McDonald, used computer models to show that about 25 percent of cities use at least 40 percent of their available water, meaning they are under water stress. Previous estimates had the number of water-stressed cities as high as 40 percent.

Some large cities depend on water underground, known as groundwater, and a select few turn the ocean’s salty water into drinkable water, a process called desalination. But the majority of the cities studied, almost 80 percent, largely use surface water — reservoirs, lakes and other water sources on the Earth’s surface, which are more susceptible to immediate changes in weather, like droughts, McDonald said.

UN urges action to protect forests’ genetic diversity

As reported by the BBC, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation has recently released an action plan regarding protection of the world’s forest genetic resources:

“Data from 86 countries illustrate that insufficient awareness of the importance of forest genetic resources… often translate into national policies that are partial, ineffective or non-existent,” explained Linda Collette, secretary of the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA).

“Only about 3% of the world’s tree species are actively managed,” she added.

(Break)

It say genetic diversity forms the “mainstay of biological diversity”, enabling species to adapt to changing environments, such as climate change and emerging diseases.

The plan adds: “FGR(Forest Genetic Resources) provide a direct food source for human and animals, even at times when annual crops fail.”

(Break)

FAO assistant director-general for forestry Eduardo Rojas-Briales observed: “Forests provide food, goods and services which are essential to the survival and well-being of all humanity.

The New Message itself states that “Half the world’s forests should be preserved”, so this plan, if put into effect, would be a welcome development in light of the changing world.

Extreme heat to become more common in our changing world.

As reported by Climate Central, a recent land temperature analysis covering the years 1979 – 2012 indicates that instances of extreme heat are becoming more common worldwide:

“This study shows that the frequency of hot extremes over land has continued to increase in the last 15 years, despite an apparent stabilization of the global mean temperature,” study lead author and ETH Zurich researcher Sonia Seneviratne said in an email.

To perform the analysis, two datasets were used to essentially divvy the globe’s land into grids and then look at shifts in the number of areas experiencing 30 days of extreme heat per year compared to the 1979-2010 average. The study defined extreme heat as daily temperatures in the top 10 percent for a given area.

In spring, summer, and fall, most parts of the globe have seen extreme temperatures rise even more. Parts of Europe, South America, and the eastern U.S. have seen the most consistent rise across all three seasons. Extreme high temperatures have increased by up to 2.7°F per decade in those areas.

The article also indicates that this trend shows no signs of slowing down:

Though this study only includes data through 2012, record heat has been a recurring theme throughout the globe since then. High temperature records were set in Alaska and Siberia in the summer of 2013. And 2014 began with heat waves in Australia, Argentina and Brazil, while Western Europe has seen record or near-record warmth.

Recent report by the IPCC highlights future effects of climate change

A recent article on the BBC news website speaks on how serious the effects of climate change on our changing world could be:

The costs of inaction on climate change will be “catastrophic”, according to US Secretary of State John Kerry.

One of the areas of concern highlighted by the report is food production, which, in the case of certain crops such as wheat, could be reduced by as much as 25% globally as a result of climate change. (<a href=

Mr Kerry was responding to a major report by the UN which described the impacts of global warming as “severe, pervasive and irreversible”.

It repeats things stated in the revelatory text: The Great Waves of Change, such as that the effects could lead to greater impoverishment, even amongst communities in wealthy nations:

Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which produced the report, told BBC News: “Even in rich countries, the impacts of climate change could lead to greater incidents of pockets of poverty, even in rich countries could lead to impoverishment of some particular communities.

“However there is an equity issue, because some of the poorest communities in the poorest countries in the world are going to be the worst hit.”

The report by the IPCC, mentioned in the article, highlights several areas of concern, including the impact on food production:

Food security is highlighted as an area of significant concern. Crop yields for maize, rice and wheat are all hit in the period up to 2050, with around a tenth of projections showing losses over 25%.

Extreme Heat and Floods Strike Eastern Europe

May 2014 has seen extraordinary weather patterns affecting eastern Europe, including flooding and record-high temperatures. Here is an example of how flooding has affected this part of the world, as reported on wunderground.com:

Heavy rainfall began falling in the Balkans on May 14th and continued through the 17th. Some local precipitation reports for this period included 245 mm (9.65”) at Tuzla in Bosnia, 219 mm (8.62”) at Loznica, Serbia and 190 mm (7.48”) in Belgrade, Serbia. Belgrade also experienced a 151 mm (5.94”) fall during a thunderstorm on May 4th, so their May monthly precipitation has already exceeded 370 mm (14.57”). For perspective, Belgrade’s normal May rainfall total is 74 mm (2.91”). The ensuing floods have now destroyed an astonishing 100,000 homes and businesses as well as at least 230 schools and hospitals according to latest press reports. Given the extent of the floods it is fortunate that only 43 flood-related fatalities have been reported so far. Some 2,000 landslides have also occurred in the region.

And the record-high temperatures, which have affected Estonia, Finland and Russia:

An all-time national monthly heat record was set in Estonia on Monday, May 19th when the temperature peaked at 33.1°C (91.6°F) at Kunda. This figure obliterated the previous highest observed May temperature in the country of 31.2°C (88.2°F) set at Pjanryi in May 2007. The capital city of Estonia, Tallinn, broke its May monthly heat record as well with 31.4°C (88.5°F) reading (previous record was 29.7°C/85.5°F on May 26, 1958).

Record-high temperatures were recorded in Russia in places such as Arkhangelsk (31.7°C (89.1°F) recorded on 20th of May) which, at 64° 34’ N latitude, lies close to the arctic circle.

April 2014, a month of extreme weather.

This April past has featured some of the most extreme weather since records began according to this article at wunderground.com:

April featured disastrous floods in the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan (where a landslide on May 2nd killed as many as 2,700). Unusual warmth persisted in much of Europe and southern China while more cold and snow continued in the eastern half of the U.S. A violent tornado outbreak hit the U.S. Midwest and Southeast late in the month and a strong tropical cyclone pounded Queensland, Australia. Preliminary NASA data indicates that this past April was globally the 2nd warmest on record (since 1880).

The weather events included torrential rainfall, such as these ones recorded in the US:

Some parts of the world experienced record-breaking rainfall for the month of April.

The same storm system entrained a deep plume of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico resulting in an amazing rainstorm in the Mobile, Alabama to Pensacola, Florida area. Pensacola saw 20.47” (520 mm) of rainfall over a 24-hour period on April 29-30 (including 5.68”/144 mm in just one hour on the night of April 29th) and an all-time calendar day rainfall record of 15.55” (395 mm) on April 29th. The storm punctuated what became the wettest single month in the city’s records (since 1879) with a total of 29.53” (750 mm). Mobile picked up 11.24” (285 mm) on April 29th, its 3rd greatest calendar day rainfall (since 1871) and making this the wettest April on record with a 18.09” (459 mm) total.

And record high temperatures, such as these recorded on the African continent:

Some extreme heat was experienced during April in West Africa. The temperature at Linguere, Senegal peaked at 47.0°C (116.6°F) on April 18th, which was the hottest temperature measured on earth for the month and just short of the all-time April monthly record for Africa of 48.1°C (118.6°F) set at Kayes, Mali some years ago. Nearby Senegal, in Gambia, the temperature reached 45.0°C (113.0°F) at Fatoto on April 4th, which was just short of the Gambian all-time national heat record of 45.5°C (113.9°F) set at Basse Santa Su in 2009. Burkino Faso also saw near record heat with a 45.6°C (114.1°F) reading at Dori on April 17th.

All of these extreme weather events are powerful signs of the change that is coming to world and readers would do well to take heed; there will be many more as the years progress. To read more about the change that is to come and what you can do to prepare, visit: http://www.newmessage.org

Report claims cereal prices will surge 44 per cent.

The charity Oxfam has claimed that the effects of climate change could cause a price rise of 44% over today’s prices for many cereals and has called on the “big 10” food companies to curb their emissions:

“The charity has claimed the ‘Big 10’ food and drink companies combined emit more greenhouse gases than Scandinavia, and has warned these firms could face financial ruin if they do not do more to tackle climate change.”

“It has been predicted that by 2050 there will be 50 million more people made hungry because of climate change, and Oxfam has suggested that the price of key products like Kellogg’s Corn Flakes could rise by 44 percent by 2029. In its critical report, the charity has called on the firms, which is says generate £650 million a day in revenues – equivalent to the total gross domestic product of all the world’s lower income countries – to cut their combined emissions by 80 million tons by 2020.”

Food price rises are one of the future difficulties predicted in the Great Waves of Change and this report is a sign and a reminder of the need to prepare.

In The World But Not of The World

Facing the implications of our changing world (loss of food, energy and water sources) can be frightening for many people, understandably.

A great truth that has been affirmed by religious traditions down the ages is that people have an aspect of their being that transcends physical existence; this usually being called the soul or a similar term.

God’s New Message for the world reaffirms this ancient truth and gives it new meaning and clarification:

“You are here to serve a greater purpose, beyond mere survival and the gratification of the things you may think you want. This is true because you have a spiritual nature. You have a spiritual origin and a spiritual destiny. Your failure in this life is the failure to respond to your spiritual nature, which has been distorted and maligned by the religions of your world, which has been neglected and denied by the science of your world. You have a spiritual nature. You have a greater purpose to serve. When you trust your inclination for this purpose, you will be able to come closer to it. When you feel confident that it represents a genuine source of love, then you will begin to open yourself to it, and this will be a great homecoming for you.”

(Quote taken from this page here.)

So humanity has an origin and destiny that is not of this world; we are “in the world but not of the world” you might say. This doesn’t mean that this reality doesn’t matter, however. The greater aspect of ourselves chose to come here to experience separation from our Source and it is here on a mission.

For people who are in the world/coming into the world at this time, this mission will be related to the changes the world will now undergo due to human abuse and overuse of the environment. The conditions of our changing world are a calling and many now must respond.

May our state of being in the world but not of the world serve to be a source of strength and encouragement for those who can respond.

We each came to the world from our Ancient Home to contribute something here.

We each came to the world from our Ancient Home to contribute something here.

California wildfires on the rise in this changing world?

The Los Angeles Times reports that 15 large California wildfires are raging in San Diego County and the surrounding region, in the United States. Structures have been destroyed and over one hundred thousand people have been evacuated. Many thousands of acres have been burned. Hot Santa Ana winds have been indicated as a major factor causing these fires.

California wildfires on the riseWill we see more and more wildfires like this in the changing world, as climates destabilize, and oceans become hotter and more acidic, as droughts become more common and widespread? All of this comes as economies become more brittle and vulnerable, as nations struggle to provision their populations, as pollution blights more places and clean fresh water becomes increasingly scarce.

How will you know what to do in this changing world? How will you navigate climate chaos, peak energy, economic crises, food shortages and civil unrest? You were born for this time. God has a plan for this world and for your life, but how will you know what this is?

The New Message from God provides a pathway to building a bridge from your personal mind to the deeper mind within you—the mind that is connected to God’s will and plan—the mind of Knowledge. Hear God’s New Messsage for yourself and recognize it if you can. Does it speak down the ancient corridors of your deeper mind?

If you embark on this pathway, and seek out your deepest experience and your deepest desires, you can build your relationship with God and what God wants from your life. And you can build a dynamic and strong relationship with with this changing world, to better respond to the changing world, survive in this changing world, and contribute to this changing world.  Rather than being simply a hostile and dangerous place, the world becomes your beneficiary: you are here to give to the world, finding where its needs and your greater gifts intersect. The world blesses you and you in turn bless it.
