David Cameron warned a fresh global economic disaster could be looming as Ebola, conflict in the Middle East and Russia’s interventions in Ukraine threaten to push the eurozone back into recession.

In a bleak assessment following the G20 gathering of international leaders in Brisbane, he said “red warning lights are once again flashing on the dashboard of the global economy” six years on from the crash that “brought the world to its knees”.

Writing in The Guardian, he said: “As I met world leaders at the G20 in Brisbane, the problems were plain to see.

“The eurozone is teetering on the brink of a possible third recession, with high unemployment, falling growth and the real risk of falling prices too.

“Emerging markets, which were the driver of growth in the early stages of the recovery, are now slowing down.

“Despite the progress in Bali, global trade talks have stalled while the epidemic of Ebola, conflict in the Middle East and Russia’s illegal actions in Ukraine are all adding a dangerous backdrop of instability and uncertainty.”

Ebola outbreak: Mali reports 3 new deaths

CBC news reports on some of the latest developments regarding the spread of Ebola across national borders in West Africa:

Malian authorities on Wednesday reported three deaths believed to be linked to a new Ebola cluster, an alarming setback as Mali tries to limit the epidemic ravaging other West African countries.

The announcement came just a day after Malian health authorities said there had been no other reported cases — let alone deaths — since a 2-year-old girl who had travelled to Mali from Guinea succumbed to the virus in late October.

Governments agree on new protections for polar bears

The Guardian reports on how, at a recent convention held in Ecuador, many world governments have agreed to implement protective measures for polar bears and other threatened species:

Polar bears are among 31 species approved for greater protections by more than 100 countries, in a move hailed by conservationists as an important step to saving the endangered mammal.

The Convention on Migratory Species conference in Ecuador closed on Sunday, with new listings for a whale capable of the world’s deepest ocean dives, and 21 shark, ray and sawfish. A proposal to list the African lion, however, was rejected due to a lack of data.

Ukraine said Russia is expanding its military presence in rebel-held areas as pro-Russian fighters attacked Ukrainian forces with artillery after as many as 200 separatists were killed.

“The war is not over yet,” Igor Plotniskiy, the newly-elected head of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic said in video statement televised and posted on the LPR website. The LPR wants “maximal integration with Russia,” he said.

Ukraine said yesterday its forces killed the rebels at Donetsk Airport in the biggest separatist loss since a Sept. 5 truce. Russia sent tanks and military vehicles across the border into rebel areas, military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said yesterday. The U.S. State Department and Pentagon, while saying Russia is massing troops and armor on its side of the border, said they couldn’t confirm a Russian tank incursion.

What’s the environmental impact of modern war?

This article from the Guardian discusses the environmental impact of war in recent times:

War is having an increasingly negative impact on the environment, which is becoming increasingly vital to address. (Image credit: freeimages.co.uk)

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has called on nations to do more to protect the environment from the devastation of war.

“The environment has long been a silent casualty of war and armed conflict. From the contamination of land and the destruction of forests to the plunder of natural resources and the collapse of management systems, the environmental consequences of war are often widespread and devastating,” said Ban in a statement for the UN’s International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict on Thursday.

The New Message affirms the need to preserve the world’s environment, including through the ending of war:

“If your children are to have a world to live in, a safe and healthy world, then environment must become the most important thing. If environment becomes the most important thing or the number one concern, then war will be ended because war is damaging to the environment.”

(From Wisdom from the Greater Community Volume 2, chapter 25: “Environments”.)

India air pollution ‘cutting crop yields by almost half’

A report by the Guardian highlights the effect that air pollution is having on India’s ability to produce food:

Air pollution in India has become so severe that yields of crops are being cut by almost half, scientists have found.

Researchers analysed yields for wheat and rice alongside pollution data, and concluded significant decreases in yield could be attributed to two air pollutants, black carbon and ground level ozone. The finding has implications for global food security as India is a major rice exporter.

He was placed in isolation “under high security,” it added.

Addressing the Security Council Tuesday, several speakers emphasized that women’s involvement in peace building and conflict prevention is as important as ever as the nature of conflict evolves.

U.N. Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka told delegates the changing nature of conflict was affecting women and girls,
“As we look around at a world in crisis, there is a sense that we are experiencing not simply an increase in violence and insecurity, but a shift in the nature of conflict itself”, she told the Security Council.

“In more and more parts of the world – Iraq, Northern Nigeria, Syria, Somalia, and Mali, to name a few – violent extremists are taking control of territory, and directly threatening and targeting women, girls, and their communities. This is the terror that contributes to the high levels of displacement we are discussing today.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) says there has been a decline in the spread of Ebola in Liberia, the country hardest hit in the outbreak.

The WHO’s Bruce Aylward said it was confident the response to the virus was now gaining the upper hand.

But he warned against any suggestion that the crisis was over.

He said the new number of cases globally was 13,703 and that the death toll, to be published later on Wednesday, would probably pass 5,000.
